It’s a hard decision to choose what we should wear on our first day at work. It’s always safer to go “up” on the dress scale than down.
You will look nicer if you arrive wearing a blazer and everyone in the office is wearing long sleeve shirts than the opposite. For the girls, it’s better if you go in a classic style and change accordingly later.
To give you guys an example, I am going to show my experience. I just finished a course in Digital Communication at SFU and I started my Practicum. Like everyone else, I was thinking: What should I wear?
So… going on the “upper” scale as I said before, I was like this:
First day at work:
Dressing code on my First day at work: Fancy Vuitton bag + Fancy black varnish high heel shoes + Super fancy watch
On the second day, as I would need my laptop, I carried a larger bag. As you can notice the dress code changed a little, the moccasins replaced the high heels and the “fancy watch” replaced the “super fancy watch”.
And… the best day of all: the way I went to work today!
Dress code for 3rd day at work and from now on:
I noticed I can go wearing jeans, tennis shoes are fine, my Polar watch is perfect for the occasion and… I don’t need to buy food because I can take it from home! Isn’t it cool?
Before wearing jeans and tennis to work, I suggest you do as I did: Go “more” and from there you move to “less”. This is much better than moving into the opposite direction!
Do you have any tips to share about “what to wear” on the first day of Internship or work? Please feel free to comment! 🙂
